Smudging is not only used in many religious ceremonies, spiritualism and witchcraft but has also been used by indigenous peoples from all over the world as a way to cleanse a space of negative energy and replace it with positive energy. Many of the ceremonies, even though they developed independently and are unconnected, share the same basic principles.

Traditionally, incense, white sage, lavender, and a host of other materials have been burned in smoking ceremonies to perform the cleansing.

Modern life, modern homes, health and an aversion to smoke can be a barrier for those wishing to smudge, leaving them unable to do so.
